CHASING AMY: The NSFW Manga

i can’t remember exactly how it happened, but at some point last week i became aware that a manga version of Chasing Amy had been published in Japan to accompany the release of Kevin Smith’s film of the same name (aka Criterion #75). a few hours later, i had to evacuate my apartment as hurricane sandy beat the shit out of the east coast. i’m not saying these two events are related, but i am hoping that Pat Robertson doesn’t read this post. anyway, the last thing i did before power went out was to track down a copy of this thing on Amazon (it’s out of print), because, you know… priorities, people.

and yeah, $60 later i am the proud owner of Kenichi Eguchi’s Chasing Amy, which is a lot like Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy except there’s gratuitous nudity (topless Alyssa on the back cover flap? why not), Jason Lee is vaguely Asian, and Ben Affleck has been replaced by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. also, Alyssa is played by… Dreama Walker from Compliance? anyway, my Japanese is not the best, but the comic novel appears to be a pretty literal adaptation of the movie, often taking pains to recreate exact shots (such as the swingset scene, and the “Never take your eye off the man” moment). the biggest concession is that there are no illustrations to accompany the most dialogue-driven scenes — the cringe-worthy ice rink “finger cuffs” bit is represented by a giant block of Japanese text. Eguchi seems more interested in savoring a different aspect of the story… hilariously, the panel in which we see Holden and Alyssa sharing their pivotal rain-drenched kiss is immediately followed by one in which Holden’s head is buried in Alyssa’s crotch.

so… yeah, this exists. post filed under “dumb things i did so that you didn’t have to.”
